our future our vision: youth voice on climate change

Wow we're busy on the blog today! Here's an update from Envision, who ran the climate change open space at 2morro. Read on to find out what YOU created at 2morro, and be proud....
Hi Everyone

We’ve gone through all your brilliant ideas and put them together to form “our future – our vision”, a message from young people to the international   decision makers meeting this December at the UN climate change conference in Copenhagen.
I’m sure you’ll agree this is pretty inspiring stuff. We hope you enjoy it!
Envision

Our Future Our Vision
 Young people will…
Lead by example and encourage others to live responsibly and be the change we want to see. We know that we don’t need to completely change our lifestyles but need to ‘try our best’ by committing to the little things. The small things can make a difference and the small changes in our everyday lives help others and the environment without having a negative impact on us. We can make people close to us care about it and inspire adults to care about our future.
Spread the word and get political by joining campaigns and signing petitions. We will keep spreading the message that together there are things we can do.
Make a commitment to reduce, re-use, recycle.
Stop burning as much fuel when we’re out and about by riding a bike and using public transport. We’ll stop flying as much and try and visit places by train or discover the wonders our own country has to offer.
Reduce our energy use by turning down the heating and wearing more jumpers, turning off the lights, watching less TV and not leaving things on standby. Make sure our schools and families do their bit too as both are meant to have our futures in mind and helping to tackle climate change is the best thing they can do to protect it.
Help to teach others, especially younger generations, about the causes of climate change and the sustainable actions that can help to tackle it. This means we need to know the facts ourselves so we will learn more and pass it on.
Consider how far our food has traveled and buy local when we can.
Reduce how much water we waste and pester those around us to do the same.
Think before we do. The easiest way to act sustainably is to think more about where things come from, what they’re made of and if we really need them.
Run our own projects and take action to improve the environment in our communities.
So you should…
Involve us and think about our futures. Become better at listening to the voices of those whose lives will be most affected by climate change. Climate change is not only an environmental issue, above all it is a young people’s issue. Our opinions matter because whatever you decide will affect us.
Make businesses take responsibility. Governments should offer subsidies to companies to use sustainable products and provide economic support for sustainable industries. Tax industries that create pollution and force them to find a way to reduce pollution. Harness the creativity and use common sense to force corporate cooperation. Simple things like all mobile phones using the same charger would mean less waste.
Put money into scientific research to improve on existing renewable energy sources and discover new ones. Commit funding for independent university research.
Commit to reducing carbon emissions. Do this through using renewable energies and not nuclear power and by spending a quantity of money that reflects the vast size of the problem. Put in place recycling systems that are the same across countries to reduce the amount of resources we are all wasting.
Balance the desire for economic growth with protecting the environment and addressing the needs of developing countries. Learn to think of the well being of humanity over profit.
Help people to make better travel decisions. It should always be cheaper to get a train than a plane. Invest extra money in low carbon transport across countries especially rail.
Hold public bodies to account; all publicly funded institutions should have to justify their resource use.
Accept climate change is a crisis, take it seriously and show leadership. Don’t let us be the generation people look back on and blame. Change is about positive action not just positive thought. Take responsibility for your decisions and the future and walk the talk. Act now!
Raise awareness and get the message straight: by using renewables and thinking sustainably we can not just maintain, but improve our lifestyles.
Work together. A unified global policy on climate change would be rather lovely…

Big Sistas are the Best

Hi Guys

Another post about one of the great things that came out of the event last weekend. Junction49, the online ideas platform from Timebank, were at 2morro running a Community Open Space.

Lots of you want to improve your community, help change the world or just make a difference to something you care about, and Junction49 were on hand to offer £200 to kickstart the best idea!

The grand winner was The Big Sista Project, a mentoring organisation for young girls and run by young girls. The project's starting with the mentoring of two girls: Danielle (10yrs) and Malaika (8yrs, and after the trial, the aim is to set up Big Sista clubs around the UK, which aims to raise positive role models for girls, within the community, and develop a sisterhood who can learn and mentor each other.

The experts that Big Sista met and received advice from were:
Constance Agyeman - Head of Programmes, Match Fund at V
Lizzy Chenery - Invisible Children Junction49 Project Volunteer
Paul Massey - Creator of we20
Laura-Liz Partoon - Battlefront campaigner

And though they won the £200, it's not over yet. Go see the Big Sista Project page on Junction49, and if you want to get involved, offer in your skills and expertise, ideas and advice. This could be the start of something....

your manifesto for education

Hey guys

Wow, it's now over a week since 2morro, we've just about recovered and had a bit of sleep.

Now it's time to look at all the great stuff that came out of the event and to track where it goes.  First up, some of you will have been to ESSA's Manifesto for Education and their Dragon's Den session where YOU got to pitch ideas on how we need to develop our schools and education system for the future.

There were three proposals taken to the Den:

- a proposal for learning programming and html with students from year 7 in ICT lessons
- a proposal for the develpment of a social enterprise scheme which gave young people the chance to develop their own initiatives
- And  the winner was 19 year old Adam Tyndall who gave a fantastic speech on the need to make the British education system more globally focused and more competitive on the international stage.

The Dragons made up a great team.  Dee Majek works for mWorld and has recently worked with a group of students from Newham college developing a website to showcase their achivements, making him particularly well placed to consider the proposals to changes in IT. Andrew Elliot is a member of the ESSA council for the North East, and is an expert on student voice. Omar Salem works for the Young Foundation on their Uprising initiative which gives young people extensive leadership training and the skills they need to make their ideas into realities. None of them let the competitors off lightly, demanding all the details of how it would work in practice.

ESSA got lots of ideas from the workshop and the Dragon's Den and will be writing it all up to contribute to the Manifesto. We'll share the full Manifesto with you when it's ready....

AJ the film-maker

AJ Nakasila, a 19 year old filmmaker from East London will be coming to the 2morro festival! YAY! To date he has made 4 films for Channel 4 and is currently working on another four. These are for the Three Minute Wonder slot on Channel 4 Prime time at 7.55pm.  Common threads that run through AJ’s films are the way young people respond to each other and to offer an insight into the problems concerning their environments.  He is a firm believer in trying to make a difference in his community and other deprived communities around the world and  his films address a range of issues including identity, opportunity and poverty.

This summer AJ will be leading a project which will engage a number of young people from East London in a series of 24 film challenges focused on issues of neighbourhood in the shadow of the Olympics.  These challenges will take place during the school holidays and are open to 16 to 18 year olds who live in the Olympic host boroughs of Newham, Hackney, Waltham Forest, Tower Hamlets and Greenwich. If that's you, find AJ at 2morro!

At the 2morro festival he will be talking about this projects and why community is so important to him (catch him at the Community Debate in the Debating Chamber in the morning).   He will also be showing one of his Channel 4 three minute films which highlights the importance of telling all sides of a story of a neighbourhood at the festival and he will be meeting you all and answering questions you might have.

We Heart Recycled Art

Hi Everyone

A couple of weeks ago we put up a blog post announcing Collect.Create.Capture, an activity that James Mummery from Battlefront is lining up for you all to get involved with.

Now, the man himself speaks about his campaign and why Recycled Art is where it's at. Enjoy!

Hey Guys and Gals,

Let me introduce to you the recycled art stall at 2morro where you become the recycled artist: Collect.Create.Capture. You have the opportunity to put your creative skills to the test, and dig out that childhood knowledge of origami swans, to make the best possible creation from recycled newspapers. Collect your paper from one of the beaming, helpful assistants at the stand; create your sculpture and then have your creation captured on film by our team to be uploaded on to our online gallery. The best creation will win a prize as well as being safe in the knowledge that they conquered 2morro.

This stand has come about as a result of the campaign Free Newspapers Cost the Earth, a campaign which is tackling the waste created by free newspapers in London by promoting consumer and industry recycling. The campaign is completely youth led, and was the invention of James Mummery, an Envision student (check out their other fantastic stalls at 2morro!), who was also involved in the Channel 4 multimedia project Battlefront - 20 young campaign gurus who will be running a campaign workshop at the event too.

Free Newspapers have a huge environmental impact and it is vital that we all recycle our free newspapers. In one day in London, over 1.7 million free newspapers are distributed daily - enough to make a single stack almost 14 times higher than the Canary Wharf Tower. By leaving your paper on the train, tube, bus or pretty much anywhere other than a recycling bin - you can not guarantee that your paper is being recycled. Big deal? you may think; but when paper goes into landfill, it decomposes releasing methane gas which is 20 times more harmful to the environment than CO2.  If we recycled every free newspaper in London we could save around 80 tonnes of CO2 emissions daily and make a big impact in the battle against climate change.

So have some fun with the recycled art at Collect.Create.Capture - because you can have a laugh whilst being green; and enter our competition by having a photo taken of your creation.

Win Tickets to the Manifesto for Change at Channel 4

Hi Everyone

A post today from Annie Quick at ESSA who are running the brilliant Manifesto for Change at 2morro. They want your ideas and the sky's the limit, so go share your ideas no matter how out-there.....

Tell us what you want to change about education, and win tickets to our manifesto launch in the Channel 4 studios!

What subjects do you think should be taught in schools? How could classes be more fun? What would make you want to go to college in the morning? Maybe you want to learn in a virtual reality? Or maybe you want a trampoline in every classroom or the power to fire and hire your teachers?

On Saturday, you will have the chance to make a 3 minute proposal for changes you want to see in education to an exciting panel at our Dragons Den. We want ideas for people who are in education, or have recently left it. You can enter on your own or with some friends. Your ideas can be as crazy as you like, and your presentations should be as innovative and creative as possible (we will have screens for PowerPoint or videos if you need them). After the presentation, you will be asked questions by the judges and the audience. All the ideas presented will contribute to our Manifesto for Change in education which we will be presenting to policy makers, and the winning presentation will get two tickets to our ‘Manifesto for Change’ Launch in the Channel 4 studios with top judges and celebrities. For ideas and inspiration, go to www.studentvoice.tv and youtube.com/yourstudentvoice where students have been sending in videos of what they would change.

Start planning now! The number of presentations is limited so to enter the Dragon’s Den, or if you have any questions, email me at anniequicktalk@hotmail.com. There will also be a workshop earlier in the day when you can discuss ideas with others and finalise your presentations.

I can’t wait!

It just makes SENSE

SENSE media are dropping in with a post today, courtesy of Duane Melius, the guy behind the SENSE machine! They're an incredible organisation and we can't wait to have them at the event!

2morro will soon be today and when it is SENSE Media will be there, in the thick of the action, coming at it from simultaneous directions.

Lovely. Let me just admire that sentence. Every word is true.

Moving on, we are really looking forward to 2morro. We’ve got some exciting stuff planned. Check out our photo exhibition by talented young photographer Alicia Little. Or take part in the interactive photo exhibition. No effort required. Just look out for our photographer on the day. What’s the one piece of tech you just can’t live without? We want to know so we can share it with the world. Think of it as a real-life tag cloud.

And then there’s the moving image. Our talented young team will be there to capture the day in it’s full and dizzying glory. Plus we will be putting the active into interactive with our DV Shootouts. 45 young people will have the chance to take part in creating the film of the day. The best footage will be used in the final film, along with crediting your name and winning a fantastic prize (NB, expect it to be something pretty awesome).

Put all of that together with the fantastic 2morro pie and I think you will agree we are talking about a feast. To say the least we are really excited. I dare you to look at the schedule, and what the organisers have lined up and not feel the same. The south bank will not know what has hit it!

Until the day, I hope you are getting ready. See the schedule, or ask a member of staff on the day if you would like to get involved in any of our activities. All are welcome! You don’t need any previous experience and the fantastic Krishna Maroo from SENSE will be on hand to sharpen your skills before you are sent out into 2morroland.

Thanks to all the other partners and groups that will be there on the day and thanks to you. It’s time to make 2morro. How do you want it?

Hide&Seek like you've never played it before...

Hi Guys

Today a post from Hide&Seek, who make games that use digital technology to let you tell stories, compete and cooperate with strangers, and transform the city into a playground.

Hello, we're Hide & Seek! At 2morro, we'll be running three rounds of our Playmakers camera game.  Working with our community of players and designers, we've been trying to come up with a game involving teamwork and video cameras. If you join us for our camera game (running 3 times in the day at 2morro), you'll work in teams to race around the Southbank in a clue-hunt - you'll be given video cameras and yep you've guessed it, the challenge will involve filming....

In the last couple of months, we've run six or seven playtests - each with a slightly different arrangement of theme, rules, and targets.  From a first-person shooter with film instead of bullets to secret spies hunting street names in Soho, we've tried a bunch of different ways to improve on the basic game.

But although we'll be bringing our most recent version of the game to 2morro, the rapid rate of change means that – with a couple of weeks still to go – that ruleset could look like pretty much anything.

In the meantime, if you're interested in finding out more about Hide&Seek or the Playmakers project, have a look at our website. And check out this short vid from a recent playtest of Soho Spy Squad to see what we do!

The Spinebreakers hit 2morro

Hi Everyone,

Here's a guest post from one of the team at Spinebreakers, Samara. We can't wait for their session at 2morro! If you haven't seen Spinebreakers yet, it's an amazing community of book reviewers, editors and writers run by Penguin, and all for young people.

Hello, my names Samara and I’m getting involved in the 2morro event by being a member of Spinebreakers. We’re showcasing our website and leading a Question and Answer session with author Kevin Brooks about his new book – check out my book review on Spinebreakers.

I look forward to debating with you guys, maybe we can tackle some problems we may have, like, when see each other on street and avoid saying Hi! I’m looking forward to the workshop about a construction of a magazine and maybe I could talk to those who fund events incase I should chose to set up my own one day. (I know, high ambitions.) I am looking forward to the music aspect –I love music! Any music and guys know, there’s not just one genre for e.g. rock, hip –hop, funky house. Music is universal.

To end I’m going to say that you guys need to read ‘A Fraction of the Whole’ by Steve Toltz. He writes it like you would talk it, it’s an everyone’s novel meaning you will be interested once you’ve started and also ‘Then’ by Morris Gleitzman - even though it may look patronizing it’s not, I swear, it’s the only novel that made me cry and besides, Gleitzman did that on purpose to tell the experience of Nazi’s through a child’s eyes. It’s an arts thing when authors do that. Trust me! To end I’m going to say peace and I hope you enjoy the event!

meet the 2morro team!

Hello and welcome to the 2morro blog! This is the place to find out about the latest things happening on the day, and a behind the scenes look on how it's all coming together. There'll be  updates written by lots of the people who are running sessions, plus we'd love to get your blog entries, too. This blog is a place for you to tell us about any projects you're involved with. You can also share what you want to get out of 2morro, and what you're excited about. If you want to contribute a post, email us at hello@2morro.org. Your blog can be anything you like - photos, a youtube clip or good old fashioned writing.

First we wanted to introduce ourselves as the team getting the event ready. There's Amanda, who's producing 2morro and working with everyone to create the content. Lizzie is running the communications so if you want to get your voice heard on the blog, she's the one who'll be getting back to you. Natalie's our co-ordinator and part of her job is being on Facebook and all our Social Networking sites, keeping you all updated. Call that work?! No honestly, she's doing loads. And Jess is the event organiser and making sure everything works on the day. Then there's you. We want 2morro to be the best it can be, which means we want your ideas and feedback on what you want to do: via the messageboard and the social networks.

So, until 4th July, get involved online and let's make 2morro the best event of the summer. Forget all those other festivals, this is where it's at, plus there's no mud.

The 2morro team.

it's garbage

Some of the campaigners from Channel 4's Battlefront Project are coming to 2morro to share their stories of the campaigning life. There's one who's been working on an issue that annoys a lot of us. You know all the free newspapers that get thrust into your hand when you just want to be left alone and get to where you want to go? Well, with millions of papers left all over bus-stops, tubes and on our streets, ever wondered what happens to them? James Mummery ran his battlefront on just this issue, and he's going to be at 2morro inviting you to get creative with free newspapers. The best design wins a prize and there's only one rule - glue, tape or staples, just paper and your hands. Can you be the next big recycled artist?

Here's a film from James' campaign to get you started....

How it all Began....

A few of you have been asking us where we got this whole idea of the 2morro festival in the first place. Well, here's where it all began....

Last year the 2morro organising team produced a festival in East London called 2gether (basically we love events with a 2 in the title...). Taking place under a hot summer sun, the event was all about the new ways that technology can help us to improve the world, and it brought together loads of different groups of people who never get round to talking but REALLY REALLY should. We had geeks talking to charities, entrepreneurs talking to campaigners and everything in between.

But for all the adults talking about technology, the internet, campaigning, you get the picture, it was actually a group of under 24s who really knew what was going on. They basically blew everyone else out of the water and we started thinking: why is this event only for people in their 30s plus? (No offence if you're reading this and came to 2gether). We actually need to bring together the next generation because they're the ones making the change and getting on with it. Everyone else is running to keep up. Take a look at the film below, which was made at 2gether by the younger group, in collaboration with Bold Creative. They wanted uncover to what the 2gether audience thought about the relationship between the older and younger generations.....

So one year later, here comes 2morro. It came out of the 2gether event but it's now got a life of its own - and picking up from the film Bold Creative made last year, we're going to be hosting the Debate to end all Debates about how you think older people perceive you! Tell us what you think about this by leaving a message on the facebook page. Do you feel respected or patronised? Is the gap between young people and adults widening or getting smaller? How can adults relate to you better - or maybe you don't want them to! So go share what's on your mind, and see you at the Debating Chamber 3pm sharp for the big debate.

Envision @ 2morro

Today a post from the lovely team at Envision, who are a 2morro partner organisation. They're inviting YOU to get involved in a really exciting Climate Change event at the festival. But instead of us going on about it, here's the info straight from the horse's mouth!

What do YOU think we should be doing to tackle climate change? What steps will you take as an individual and what action do governments need to take?
Envision, in partnership with Radiowaves, will be running a climate change open space to explore creative ways for you to contribute to our future - our vision, a message from the participants of 2morro, to the international delegates at the UN climate change conference that is taking place in Copenhagen this December. To many this conference represents the last chance to take meaningful action to tackle climate change, a global issue that will affect young people more than any other generation even though we are the least responsible for causing it. This is what we want to know - check out the video below:

</object>
The open space is taking place in Riverside 1 from 2pm – 3.50pm and will include creative brainstorms, collage, competitions, challenges and campaigning. We’ll be looking at climate change from a social as well as environmental perspective and discussing how other issues like poverty, community and human rights and health all have their part to play in the battle to save our planet.
We will be submitting the ideas and responses generated at the event and online to the Government and they will feed in to the UN climate change conference. There are 19 million people in the UK under the age of 24 – this is our future and we can shape it!
To get started leave a comment at
or fill out this survey
and forward the link to other young people so they can have their say.

See you at 2morro everyone!

Heading to the Battlefront

Hi everyone, Here's a message from the Battlefronters, take a look and you can also meet them on the day.

Hello!  I'm Jo and I'm a producer on the Channel 4 website and TV series "Battlefront" about teenagers campaigning for causes they really believe in.
If you haven't come across Battlefront yet, then take a look at http://battlefront.co.uk now to find out more...

To give you a snap-shot: Battlefront showcased the campaigns of 20 young people who stood up for issues as diverse as promoting random acts of kindness to eliminating gun and knife crime.  They each got their own web-page on the site, and uploaded their own films and blogs about their campaign progress.  They ran their campaigns all year and all of them achieved some amazing things.

Now, on July 4th, 6 of the Battlefront campaigners will be coming to 2morro.  You'll get a chance to speak to them about their campaigns and ask them loads of questions about Battlefront.  But, most importantly, they want to talk to YOU about your campaign ideas and hear about the issues that matter to YOU.  Their workshop will take place at 1pm, so pop that time into your schedule and come along.

Why not have a think now about what sort of campaign you would like to run?  It can be serious or light-hearted, about a global issue or something local, affecting many or affecting just a few... The choice is yours... But the Battlefronters are keen to hear your ideas.

Looking forward to seeing you there.

To celebrate the great work of young volunteers, TheSite.org, an online guide to life for 16 to 24-year-olds, is looking for a young person to profile as a case study for their volunteer pages. If you’ve got a great project and you’d like to be interviewed, or if you’d like to write an article about your voluntary work yourself, please contact Gabriella at media@youthnet.org for more information. Gabriella will be at the 2morro event, and can interview you there! For an idea of other case studies they've already covered, visit: http://www.thesite.org/workandstudy/volunteering/casestudies
